The Living Word congregation (membership of 39) began worship service on Sunday, December 15, 1985 in the home of Edward and Judy Godbee in Bogart, Georgia. The following three worship services were held in the home of J.W. and Mary Nelms and Walter Smith, respectively. Subsequent worship services were held in the basement of James and Maureen Patton's home. With membership increasing, it was necessary to seek out larger facilities and by March 1986 with 92 members strong, the church began meeting in the facilities of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Epps Bridge Road. Living Word would move two more times before moving to their current location.
August 23, 1987 the church, un-incorporated at the time, agreed to make an offer to purchase approximately 38 acres ($3000 per acre) on Highway 78 between Clotfelter Road and Ruth Jackson Road. On September 27, 1987 the contract to purchase said property was accepted.
November 15, 1987 the Board of Directors for Living Word, (Larry T. Davison, Minister/Moderator & President, Jean Davison, Secretary/Clerk, Ricky Payne, Larry Holmes, Eddie Godbee and James Patton, Trustees) agreed and accepted the Articles of Incorporation as stated in the Covenant Agreement and Letter of Commitment from the Home Mission Board. Living Word Baptist Church of Oconee County, Inc. was incorporated on December 15, 1987.
September 18, 1988 the church relocated from the Seventh Day Adventist Church into facilities located on Mars Hill Road in Watkinsville, Georgia (Downs Pre-School).
May 31, 1989 the church voted to move, once more, this time into facilities of a defunct Presbyterian Church located on Atlanta Highway. This was the last move before moving to the current location on Monroe Highway.
